The following is a list of collections within JCHS' holdings.  This is not an exhaustive list of JCHS collections, but represents possible areas of research interest.  If you have questions regarding JCHS collections, please email the curator, Leigh Ann Randak, leighann@johnsoncountyhistory.org

One-Room Schoolhouse Collection

This collection includes material from Johnson County's rural schools including teacher's registers/attendance logs, photographs, school souvenirs, objects, student projects, school board records, consolidation information, commencement programs and oral histories.  Contact JCHS for specific schools represented.

Margaret Morgan Coralville 4th of July Collection, c. 1983-2000

This collection includes photographs, history, and information regarding the Coralville 4th of July parade/4th Fest.

Old Capitol Questers Collection

This collection includes photographs, programs, papers, and other organizational records of the group.

Goosetown Collection

Collection of photographs, family histories, objects, research and correspondence related to families in the Goosetown neighborhood of Iowa City.

Quilt Registration Collection

Color slides of quilts in private collections in Johnson County and those in the JCHS collection.  Assembled as part of a JCHS quilt registration project.

Oral History Collection

Contains over 100 recorded oral histories (some transcribed) of Johnson County residents.  Project topics include: 

  • Life on the farm before 1960
  • Iowa City Theaters
  • Johnson County Fair
  • One-Room Schools
  • Coralville Schoolhouse
  • Tiffin
  • Community Stories Project
  • St. Mary & St. Patrick Schools
  • World War II knitting projects
                          Other individual non-project oral histories are also included.

William B. Snyder family letters- c. 1820-c.1908

Letters from the Gold Rush from J.P.W. Snyder as well as other family correspondence.

Mae Coldren Collection, c. 1848-c.1940s
 Personal correspondence, postcards, photographs and history of Coldren's family which includes the Ezekiel Clark family, Samuel Kirkwood family, and John C. Coldren family.

Lucille Burianek Greeting Card Collection, c.1910-1920
Greeting cards given to or collected by Burianek.  Holidays include New Years, Valentine's Day, Thanksgiving, Halloween and birthday greetings.

Mezik Family Glass Plate Negative Collection, c.1900-1910
Glass plate negatives including photographs around the Mezik home, 1120 N. Dodge Street, Iowa City.

Carol Spaziani Iowa City Business Collection
Various objects from mostly extinct Iowa City businesses.

Iowa City Urban Renewal Photographs, c. 1970-1976
Over 150 color slides taken by Theo Lindley documenting downtown Iowa City during the period of Urban Renewal.

Perry Oakes Collection
This collection includes photographs, personal papers, and business papers related to the Nicholas Oakes family, Oakes Brick Co., and Oakes Coal Company.

Fryauf Harness Collection
Nearly 100 harness making tolls and harness pieces from Fryauf Harness Shop, Dubuque Street, Iowa City.

Community Stories Collection
Photographs, histories of Johnson County communities, objects and oral histories assembled as part of the JCHS' Community Stories project in 2008-2009.
